Manoj Nelliyattu Shyamalan (né le 6 août 1970), connu professionnellement sous le nom de M. Night Shyamalan, est un réalisateur, scénariste et producteur américain d'origine indienne connu pour avoir réalisé des films avec des intrigues surnaturelles contemporaines qui culminent avec une fin de torsion. Il est également connu pour filmer ses films (et mettre en scène ses intrigues) à Philadelphie et dans les environs, en Pennsylvanie, où il a grandi. Shyamalan a sorti son premier film, Praying with Anger, en 1992 alors qu'il était étudiant à l'Université de New York. Son deuxième film, le grand long métrage Wide Awake, réalisé en 1995 mais sorti trois ans plus tard, n'a pas réussi financièrement. Shyamalan a acquis une reconnaissance internationale lorsqu'il a écrit et réalisé The Sixth Sense en 1999, qui a été un succès commercial et nominé pour six Oscars, dont: Meilleur film, Meilleur réalisateur et Meilleur scénario original. Il a suivi The Sixth Sense en écrivant et en réalisant Unbreakable, sorti en 2000, qui a reçu des critiques positives. Son film Signs de 2002, où il a également joué Ray Reddy, a remporté un succès à la fois critique et financier. Son prochain film The Village (2004) a reçu des critiques mitigées de la part des critiques, mais s'est avéré être un succès financier. Son dernier film fantastique, Lady in the Water (2006), a été pire sur le plan critique et financier. Le film The Happening (2008) a été un succès financier mais a également reçu des critiques négatives. The Last Airbender (2010) a reçu des critiques extrêmement négatives aux États-Unis et a remporté 5 Razzie Awards, mais a continué à gagner près de 320 millions de dollars à l'international au box-office. Son dernier film, Devil (2010), pour lequel il a produit et écrit l'histoire, mais n'a pas réalisé, n'a pas été projeté par la critique avant sa sortie mais a finalement reçu des critiques mitigées. Devil n'a pas été un succès commercial mais est devenu un succès commercial par rapport à son petit budget et a été nommé parmi les 5 meilleurs films d'horreur de 2010 par ShockTillYouDrop.com.
