Le 24 janvier 1979, Tatyana Marisol Ali est née de Sonia, infirmière au Panama, et du shérif Ali, policier à la retraite de Trinidad. À l'âge de quatre ans, elle commence à chanter et goûte à la célébrité lorsqu'elle supplie sa mère de l'emmener à une audition pour Sesame Street (1969). Elle a ensuite participé à de nombreuses productions dans sa ville natale, New York, dont le spectacle de Broadway "Fences" - avec James Earl Jones et, plus tard, Billy Dee Williams- et le spectacle off-Broadway "Orfeo del Campo". À l'âge de sept ans, elle est apparue dans Star Search (1983) et a gagné deux fois, obtenant quatre étoiles lors de sa deuxième apparition. À 11 ans, Tatyana quitte New York pour Los Angeles afin d'y établir sa carrière. Peu de temps après, elle obtient son rôle décisif, celui d'"Ashley Banks", cousine de Will Smith, dans The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (1990). Pendant le tournage de "The Fresh Prince", elle a également eu des projets parallèles intéressants, notamment des rôles d'invitée dans des émissions de télévision telles que The Cosby Show (1984), The All New Mickey Mouse Club (1989) (alias "The Mickey Mouse Club"), Kyno's Storytime (1992), Are You Afraid of the Dark ? (1990) et Foster's Field Trip (1994)..
