En août 1945, l'Union soviétique a envahi la zone autour de l'île de Sakhaline. Tetsu Ezure s'est enfuie avec ses deux fils et est arrivée dans la ville d'Abashiri, préfecture de Hokkaido, au Japon. Il y ont trouvé le froid extrême et la famine. Ils ont travaillé très dur. En 1971, le second fils de Tetsu, Shujiro, retourne au Japon après avoir connu le succès aux États-Unis. Il retourne à Abashiri pour la première fois en quinze ans. Sa mère Tetsu Ezure y vit désormais seule. Sakura Guardian in the North
